C Beyond Easel Painting: Expanding Painting Opportunities for Young Children
Kathy Beck, BS in Education from University of Idaho, MS in Education with ECE emphasis, Early Childhood Education Program Coordinator for BMCC
“Art is both a fundamental and distinctive way of knowing. A person needs to think in terms of images as well as words” (Art: Basic for Young Children.) Easel painting has been a staple in the early childhood setting since the days of Maria Montessori. Painting experiences, however, can encompass SO MUCH MORE. This workshop will provide you with a plethora of ideas for providing creative opportunities that will support children’s ability to think – and express themselves—in images, as well as words.

D Conflict Resolution – Your Problems Are Not My Problems: Coping with Difficult People without Becoming One of Them

you will learn five simple strategies to:
= Stop taking other people’s misbehavior personally.
= Turn conflicts into opportunities to deepen relationships.
= Protect yourself and your serenity from abuse.
| ckc: Personal, Professional, Leadership Development
E Managing the Monster

This workshop will give a great overview of anger and anger management, not only in helping children; but for ourselves. You will explore tools and techniques in dealing with anger that will help you understand the perspectives of others, as well as slow anger in yourself. F Using Child Observations in Planning Activities & Guiding Behavior
Ruai Gregory, MA Human Development, ECE Instructor @ BMCC, Baker Ctr, 30 yrs experience
We’re all detectives, learning constantly about young children! The findings are often surprising. Simple observation techniques will be described and practiced, providing opportunities for participants to use the results to plan developmentally appropriate activities and solve challenging behaviors.
| ckc: Observation

DREAMING BIG FOR YOUR LIFE!
8:30 am – 9:45 am
Research shows that people who are able to envision a positive future for themselves can overcome huge obstacles in their lives. We need to learn how to listen to our inner voice and honor what we hear. Whether we are gifted or learning disabled, our belief in a positive, invigorating future is important to our success! This session will show you how to change behaviors that are interfering with your success and blocking your talents.

TEACHING THE DIGNITY OF DIFFERENCE
1:15 – 2:45 pm
This is an interactive, experiential workshop that requires a willingness to entertain new ideas and let go of limiting beliefs. We will have fun, move, laugh, and learn how to practice curiosity,
instead of judgment. Participants will leave with new insights and possibilities about themselves and others, as well as activities to use in programs or with staff. The content is mentally and emotionally challenging, as there is no way to get to the core of what makes us judge our differences without an examination of the emotional components. We will engage our heads and hearts while avoiding the intellectual flabbiness of “touchy-feely” experiences.
We will increase our ability to respond to other people and other cultures with a generosity of spirit. Intended side effects: more joy, less stress, more compassion, less criticism, more energy, less weariness, more hope, less despair.
Basic Tenets:
It’s not what happens to us that counts; it’s the story we tell ourselves about what happens to us that makes all the difference. We are in charge of the stories we tell ourselves and we can change our stories at anytime. Whatever we practice we get good at and we are always practicing something.
We are always teaching, but we are not always teaching what we think we are teaching.
Fear-based decisions are corrupt. Judgment is based on fear and limits possibility. Discernment and curiosity, on the other hand, invite more creativity and compassion into our lives.
